In a landmark move toward sustainable urban transport and enhanced public safety, the City of Kisumu has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Kiri Electric Vehicles (EV) Limited. The agreement paves the way for the installation of electric motorbike charging stations across the city and in 14 wards, coupled with the deployment of CCTV surveillance infrastructure at each location.
The MoU was formally signed by Kisumu City Manager Abala Wanga and Kiri EV’s Lead Electrical and Electronics Engineer Arnold Omolo during a brief ceremony held at City of Kisumu offices. The signing was witnessed by key city officials, including Director of Communications Aaron Ochieng, Head of Security Nicholas Abong, and Deputy Director of ICT Michael Obare.
“This partnership is a significant step in our journey toward a cleaner, smarter, and safer Kisumu,” said Mr. Wanga. “By embracing electric mobility and integrating it with smart surveillance, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also enhancing the security of our streets.”
Under the agreement, Kiri Electric Vehicles will establish a network of charging stations tailored for electric motorbikes, a growing mode of transport in the region. Each station will be equipped with CCTV cameras, which will feed into the city’s broader security command infrastructure to support real-time monitoring and crime prevention.
Engineer Omolo expressed Kiri’s commitment to supporting Kisumu’s green transition. “We are proud to collaborate with the city in building the infrastructure needed for a sustainable transport future. Our integrated approach ensures that innovation in mobility goes hand-in-hand with public safety.”
The initiative aligns with Kisumu’s broader strategic goals of promoting clean energy, reducing urban emissions, and leveraging technology to improve service delivery. The rollout of the charging stations and surveillance systems is expected to begin before the end of this year, with priority given to high-traffic areas and key transport corridors.
As Kisumu positions itself as a forward-looking city embracing smart urban solutions, this partnership marks a pivotal moment in its transformation journey—one that blends environmental stewardship with technological advancement.
