A delegation from the Mtwapa Municipality Board in Kilifi County has begun a four-day benchmarking tour in Kisumu City, seeking to learn from Kisumu’s growing reputation as a leader in urban management and service delivery.
The team, led by Board Chairman Joseph Chillumoh and his deputy, Her Excellency Hazel Katana, arrived in Kisumu, where they were warmly received by Kisumu City Board Chairman Engineer Kenneth Nyangaga and City Manager Abala Wanga.
Speaking during the reception, the visiting delegation noted that their mission is focused on understanding Kisumu’s best practices in waste management, city planning, revenue collection, and audit systems—areas where Kisumu has made notable progress in recent years.
Mr. Chillumoh expressed gratitude for the warm welcome extended to the team, adding that Kisumu offers an ideal environment for learning.
“We are impressed by the reception and openness we have received. Kisumu stands out as a model city, and we believe the lessons we gather here will help us strengthen our operations back in Mtwapa,” he said.
Deputy Chair Hazel Katana echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the importance of inter-county collaboration in improving urban governance.
City Manager Abala Wanga assured the team of Kisumu’s full support throughout their stay.
“We are delighted to host you. Over the next few days, you will gain firsthand experience of how our systems work, and we hope the insights will be valuable to your municipality,” he said.
The benchmarking tour will include site visits, departmental presentations, and engagements with various city officials as the Mtwapa team explores opportunities to replicate Kisumu’s successful urban management strategies.
