In a strategic move to enhance public safety and improve essential services in Kisumu’s informal settlements, the Kisumu City Disaster Management Department convened a high-level meeting with the Better for Water Organization. The session spotlighted collaborative efforts aimed at expanding access to clean tap water and strengthening fire preparedness in underserved communities.
During the meeting, Better for Water presented its ongoing initiatives, with particular emphasis on a new partnership with Kisumu Water and Sanitation Company (KIWASCO). The joint project seeks to improve water infrastructure and delivery systems in informal settlements, beginning with Flamingo area in Manyatta A as the pilot phase. The initiative is expected to significantly reduce waterborne disease risks and improve overall public health outcomes.
In addition to water access, the meeting addressed critical fire safety concerns. Better for Water unveiled plans for community sensitization on fire hazards and the training of volunteer firefighters drawn from within the slum areas. This grassroots approach aims to build local capacity for rapid response and prevention, especially in densely populated neighborhoods where fire outbreaks can be devastating.
Next Steps Outlined:
• Strengthening collaboration between Better for Water and the Disaster Management Department to ensure seamless implementation.
• Identifying opportunities to integrate fire safety awareness into ongoing water infrastructure projects.
• Planning the rollout of community firefighter volunteer training in targeted informal settlements across Kisumu.
The meeting marks a pivotal step in Kisumu City’s broader agenda to promote inclusive urban development and safeguard vulnerable populations. City officials expressed optimism that the partnership will yield tangible improvements in both water access and emergency preparedness.
