The County of Kisumu and UN-Habitat have signed a Partnership agreement which will see extensive infrastructural development in the City of Kisumu. These include modern housing units in Kibuye Estate and Muhoroni Sub-County. The pact was signed by UN-Habitat Executive Director Anacláudia Rossbach, and Kisumu Governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o.
City Manager Abala Wanga, who witnessed the signing, lauded the move, which he says will go a long way in making Kisumu Urban Settlement more affordable and modern.
The project dubbed PINUA (Partnership Implementing New Urban Agenda) is a UN-Habitat project piloting in Kisumu that focuses on co-producing green housing, improving slum communities, and ensuring participatory urban development by involving residents in the planning process. The initiative aims to achieve sustainable, transparent, and accountable urban development by centering community needs and promoting initiative development.
Key aspects of the PINUA project in Kisumu include Community-led development, an approach of working with residents rather than just for them in their neighborhood planning, Green incremental housing, which is more affordable, whose core focus is on the co-production of green and sustainable housing solutions, and a slum upgrading project that aims to improve conditions within informal settlements, addressing issues like housing, infrastructure, and livelihoods.
Others are Participatory processes where residents are actively involved in planning their communities, ensuring that their input shapes the development of their neighborhoods, broader urban development PINUA that supports broader urban development in other areas, such as the planning and improvement of townships like Muhoroni.
