Kisumu County Governor, Prof. Anyang’ Nyong’o, has directed that all street lighting within Kisumu City be restored and that Boda Boda operators across the county undergo fresh registration.
The governor issued the directives after chairing an inter-agency security meeting convened to address rising insecurity in Kisumu City and parts of the county.
The meeting brought together the National County Security team, Sub-County Administrators, and officials from the City of Kisumu. The parties deliberated on the surge in illicit brew sales, inadequate street lighting, the rise of vigilante groups, and cases of sexual violence.
“We resolved to strengthen a multi-sectoral approach to security and revise our enhancement efforts to deter insecurity in the county,” Prof. Nyong’o stated.
City Manager Abala Wanga was tasked with ensuring that all streetlights in Kisumu are revamped, powered, solarized, and fitted with CCTV cameras in collaboration with Kenya Power, to enhance efficiency and maintenance within the next sixty days.
The city manager further revealed that plans are at an advanced stage to establish a modern command center at the Kisumu Fire Station. The center, in partnership with the county security team, will enable real-time monitoring and rapid response to insecurity.
The governor further announced that all current Boda Boda operators will be re-registered into designated bases of operation, restricted in the number of pillion passengers they can carry, and required to observe regulated operating hours.
The meeting also resolved to revive traffic marshals in the city, who will work alongside county police officers to restore order on the roads.
